It wasn’t easy, but we’ve sorted through over 100 pictures from January to March of 2010. We’ve hand picked the boards that we think are worth a second look. We picked these boards for a variety of reasons…. Some of great paint jobs. Some boards are built in an interesting way. Some boards are just unique. Whatever the reason, we wanted to feature some of our favorite boards of the last 3 months. Check it out! Let us know what you think!

Please take the word “best” with a grain of salt. This is ONE person’s opinion, and the picks are based as much on the quality of the picture that was taken, as the supposed quality of the craftmanship. Boards were selected based several factors. Some have unique designs, others show great hand painting, and some are just plain AWESOME.

So here they are! Enjoy.

So many amazing boards are posted to the Cornhole Players forum and gallery that I’m sure I’ve overlooked a few. That’s impossible to avoid. As it is, I went through over 250 pictures to get it down to my favorite 24. It’s hard to put any ranking on Cornhole boards. Some have amazing construction, but less than stellar graphics. Some are put together with duct tape and super glue, but have GREAT graphics. Then some are just my personal favorites, and as such, get to be included. I’ve pulled a random assortment of boards that are cool for a variety of reasons. All these boards can be found in the Cornhole Players Forum Photo Gallery. All boards were posted between June 1st and August 31st.

With all that said… here they are! ( in no particular order )

Transporting your Cornhole boards, just got a lot easier! The Bean Bag Buddy is a great new way to haul around your big, heavy cornhole boards.

The Bean Bag Buddy is a 2 wheel cart, that is specially designed to haul cornhole boards. It has a wide wheel base, sturdy 7″ wheels, and a safety strap to keep your boards in place. The Bean Bag Buddy doesn’t just haul boards, though. It does a lot more! The Bean Bag Buddy has a handy pack for storing a full set of cornhole bags, there are 2 drink holders, and it has a score tower that attaches to the top of the cart! The Bean Bag Buddy is the perfect accessory for a big day of playing cornhole.

With help from a group called Soldiers Angels, the community members are hoping to get a few sets of Cornhole boards sent to the troops.

To get things started, forum member Milky has volunteered to buy the material and build the first set of boards. Members of the site will come up with a design, make it, and ship it to North Carolina (Soldiers Angels will cover the overseas shipping costs). PayPal donations will help to cover the shipping costs to NC.

See the forum thread for full information.

The first set will be built & customized by Milky, and will be a REALLY nice set. We didn’t want to stop there, though. We’ve teamed up with iCornhole.com to send additional boards! For every $110 we’re able to raise, we will be able to send a set of painted boards, with bags, to the troops!

If you’d like to help, you can send donations through PayPal.
Donate via PayPal to: mmiehlke@comcast.net
PLEASE be sure to put “Cornhole For The Troops” in the message box.

Even if you can only give a bit, remember that every little bit helps! As we head toward the 4th of July, remember the troops, and help us send Cornhole Boards overseas!

Thanks!!

Put together a set of building instructions for 3′x2′ cornhole boards for you could win a set of Cornhole Lanterns!

A lot of people are building 3′x2′ cornhole boards, but Cornhole Players doesn’t have a decent set of directions yet. They don’t have to be a work of art, we just need something to put on our building page so people can build some boards. If you search around the site, you’ll find the dimensions that people have used – or create your own!

We’ve teamed up with the people who make the Cornhole Lantern to give sets of Cornhole Lanterns to the creators of the best 3 sets of building instructions!

So give it a shot, you just might be good enough to win! For more information, check out the Cornhole Players contest page.

Sometimes is fun to mix things up a little. The same holds true for Cornhole! As the third of three guest blog articles from tednwv, we’re featuring Alternate Cornhole Games. These “Carnival Games” or “Skill Games” are often played by people in the downtime between their official rounds. They are a great way to help break up the day, and they’re quick and easy – so they don’t cut into your tournament play either! We’ve put together a list of some of the most popular alternate cornhole games that you might find yourself playing at a tournament. Enjoy!

Skill Games: Alternate Cornhole Games

7/21

OBJECT: Closes score to 21 after tossing 7 bags wins. 21 is the max points to get if you sink all 7 bags in the hole.

RULES: Players will get 7 cornhole bags. Player will toss bags from behind a line which is marked off 33’ 6” from center of hole on cornhole board. Player will pitch all 7 bags, trying to score as many points as possible.

SCORING: 1 point for bag on board and 3 points for cornholes. Perfect game is 7 for 7 (21 points). Hence the name 7/21.

GAME PLAY: You can play this by rounds of 5, 8, 10 or how many ever players you decide. The top 3 in the 1st round of a 5 person game advances to the next round. Second round, one person will be eliminated leaving 2 people to play for championship in round 3. Similar to Home Run Derby in baseball. Only so many players can advance from one round to the next. It can even be played as the highest points for the whole day! When people get time to come over and play, they throw their 7 bags and keep a bulletin board near the playing area with the totals right there. Tie’s will have to have a tie breaker or throw off.

A normal fee for this is $5 or $10. You can split the pot so winner get’s half or winner takes all.

Air Mail

OBJECT: Make as many “air mails” as possible pitching eight total bags.

RULES: Player starts with eight bags and pitches them from 33’ 6” away at the air mail box. Player making the most out of eight bags is crowned the champion and get’s the money! You can also play this by rounds.

A normal fee for this is $5 or $10. You can split the pot so winner gets half or do a winner takes all.

ALTERNATE: A little different version with four throwing lines. 33ft.=4 pts. 30ft=3 pts. 27ft=2 pts. and 24ft=1 pt

High Score

OBJECT: Highest score wins.

RULES: Throw 10 bags (or less or more? up to you again). Whoever has the highest score wins! This can be done every 15 minutes or so with a small donation. Or it can be done as highest total for the day. The most points from throwing 10 bags will get the money. Playoff for tie breakers.

NOTES: The key is to not make it extremely expensive to play so people will play several times throughout the day. You can even charge a $1! Or if you have a sponsor, make it FREE to play and winner get’s “blah, blah, blah from Joe Schmo Incorporated.”

Cornhole13

OBJECT: Make 13 cornholes faster than any other player.

RULES: Players will play as individuals. Each player will have 4 bags to pitch. Space boards 27′ apart (front to front). Have a stop clock ready.

GAME PLAY: Players run back and forth trying to make cornholes as quick as possible. Players compete to have the day’s best overall time. The player with the best time will be the official winner of the game.

OPTIONAL: This can also be done like a drag race. Have 2 players going at once. The first one to make 13 cornholes wins and advances.

OPTIONAL: You can even change it to where players are going for 13 points instead of cornholes. Maybe even try to 21? Possibilities are endless!

A normal fee for this is $5 or $10. You can split the pot so winner gets half or do a winner takes all.

ALTERNATE: Let everyone throw for two minutes and thriteen seconds. Keep track of the highest scores, 13 being the cut off even if time is lef. At the end of the day have the players with the top four scores compete for two minutes and thirteen seconds at the same time to see who can score the most cornholes in the alloted time.

Long Toss

OBJECT: Pretty self explanatory. Longest toss in the hole wins!

RULES: However you want. Start with close boards and give people several bags. Anyone who tosses a bag in the hole moves on to the next round.

More?

We’ve listed a few games, but I’m sure there are a bunch we’ve missed! What are your favorite games to play? Do you play any of these, only a bit different? Please let us know! Use the comment box below to share your thoughts.

So you want to have a Cornhole Tournament? First step is to figure out what type of tournament to have. Then, you’ll have to consider issues of money, location, supplies, organization, and more! With all these things to think about, it’s easy to miss an important step.

I’ve asked around in the Cornhole forum for some information about tournaments. The following is the second of 3 guest articles by “tednwv” from the Cornhole Players forum. Ted has shared with us the many facets of putting together a cornhole tournament, based on his experiences. Obviously some things below may not be as important than others, and it’s possible certain things may have been overlooked. We’d love to hear any and all of your comments! ( as long as they’re helpful, of course )

Throwing Together A Cornhole Tournament

Guest article by Ted Dillon, Cornhole Forum member “tednwv“.
Edited by Jeremy.

I would like to talk about my experiences on putting together/attending cornhole tournaments and what I perceive others to like. (This is my opinion so don’t scrutinize me over it)

(You can replace the word “Teams” with “Players” anywhere below if you are running a Singles Tournament. A Singles Tournament is one player playing against another player.)

Choose to hold a “Benefit Tournament” or a “100% Payout”. For a Benefit Tournament, you’ll start by picking your favorite charity or organization. Most tournament directors will split the pot 50/50. Half the entry fees will go to the organization you choose, and the other half will be the team payouts. 100% payout basically means that whatever you decide to charge for an entry fee will go back to the teams.

Decide on the entry fee, date, time and location. Take into consideration the number of players, the space the boards will take up, restrooms, and food & drinks. A good entry fee for a basic team tournament would be $20-$40. (Half that for Singles Tournament). Decide if you want to have teams pre-register or sign up the day of the event. Teams could get discounts if they register early. If you decide on sign ups the day of the event, give it at least an hour before the tournament begins so teams can practice. It would be better to give yourself 1 1/2 hrs. The last half hour could be used for placing teams in brackets.

Have plenty of boards and bags ready! Teams don’t like sitting around for a very long time. The more boards and bags you have, the more practice the teams can get in before the tournament starts.

Use all matching boards and bags. If you have different sets of boards and bags, teams will question whether or not one set of boards/bags are better than the other. If all the boards are made and painted to look the same, teams will accept it better. Boards should be set 27 ft. apart, from front to front.

Music! Have some type of music playing in the background. Make it a happy/loose atmosphere! Don’t have it blasting too loud though. Another option would be to see if a local radio station could do a “Live Broadcast” at your event. Maybe even a DJ?

Decide on Single Elimination, Double Elimination or Round Robin. Have brackets ready to go for the tournament you decide. Your decision should be influenced by the number of players that are planning to attend and the time allotted for the tournament. More on Different Types of Tournaments.

Have Brackets Ready. If you estimate that you will have 20-25 teams, then print all of the brackets for 20-25 teams. Brackets are usually numbered in the order that the matches will be played. Have someone specifically in charge of the bracket and keep it rolling smoothly. Don’t have boards empty with no one playing. When a board is empty, fill it with another game in the order of the bracket. Keep the tournament rolling.

Pay-outs. How will you pay out the winners? Decide if you want to pay out to the Top 3, Top 2, or have a “Winner Takes All” tournament.

Top 3 can be a split of 60%-30%-10% of half the entry fees.

Top 2 can be split many different ways. 90%-10%, 80%-20%, 70%-30%, 60%-40% of half the entry fees. I would not recommend a 50%-50% split. What is the point in playing for the championship if you get paid the same for 1st or 2nd?

Winner Takes All is self explanatory.

Forming Teams. You will need to decide how teams are going to be formed. You have two options. (This will not be an option if you decide on a Singles Tournament)

Option 1: The teams have already been set, everyone came to the tournament with their own partner.

Option 2: Place every players name in a hat and draw two names at a time, those two players will be on a team. This is also referred to as “Blind Draw Tournament”. My experience shows this has little interest for the more serious teams.

Rules. Decide on a set of rules. Most people refer to the rules from the ACA or ACO web sites. You can also make your own rules however you like. Make sure you have at least one person “in charge” who can make decisions on game conflicts and will stand by their decision. Make it clear that the person “in charge” has the final say in the rulings.

Filling the Tournament Bracket. Now you will need to decide on how to draw for the spots on the tournament bracket. There are two options for doing this.

Option 1: Place each team’s name in a hat and begin drawing the teams one at a time placing the first team drawn on the first blank line, the second team drawn on the second blank line and so on.

Option 2: Place all the numbers in a hat and when the teams sign up, they pick a number out and that is where they will be placed in the bracket. This seems to be quicker. Saves time after registration is over so you can get the tournament started on time.

The Coin Flip. The coin flip will decide a few things. Whoever wins the coin flip has choice of throwing either first or last, and/or choice of which side of the board to throw from. Generally it decides who throws first. Most non-sanctioned tournaments will let players throw from the same side of the board if they want. It never really changes. Just when you are ready to start your next match, flip a coin to see who goes first.

Start Your Tournament! Play until a winner has been decided.

The MOST IMPORTANT part of any tournament is explaining the rules and format BEFORE the tournament begins! When you print your flyers or post your tournament online, put the rules and format in it so there won’t be any questions. You could also put an email or phone number if teams have questions concerning the tournament. If teams don’t like the rules, they won’t show up.

REMEMBER! The more games you can guarantee a team to play, the more teams you will get to play! Teams are looking for the biggest bang for their buck!
