Most games of Washers are played in one of three ways. One Hole Washers, Three Hole Washers, or with Washers Pits. Each game has it’s own challenges, and the one you play may depend on materials available, playing space, or just personal preference. Detailed rules and playing information for each style can be found at WasherPlayers.net. For this article, we’re going to give the basic information to get you started playing One Hole Washers.

One Hole Washers Game — “In a Nutshell”

Equipment:

2 – One Hole Washers Boxes/Boards.

8 – 2.5″ Washers. Divided in to 2 sets of 4.
* Each set should be marked to tell them apart

Set Up:

Place the washers boxes 21 feet apart.

Give 4 washers to each player or team. ( 8 washers total )

Game Play: ( doubles )

Partners shall stand at opposite Washers boxes, each on the same side of the box.

Each team will have 4 washers of one color. All 8 washers begin at the same end.

To decide the starting team, each player should toss one washer toward the opposite box. The team closest to the hole, will toss first. This is called the “Diddle”.

The first team will then begin by throwing all 4 washers at the opposite box.

The second player will then throw all 4 washers.

After all 8 washers are tossed, teams count the points scored during the round.

After scoring, the players on the opposite end will then take their turns in the same manner. The team scoring the most points in the previous round will throw first to start the turn.

Game is played to 21 points.

For Singles Play, the players will both walk to the opposite end, throwing the next set from there.

Scoring:

3 points -in the cup
2 points – in the box
1 point – closest to the box & within one width of a washer

A washer that bounces into the box should be removed before the next player tosses.

Scoring is done by cancellation. After each round, the difference between both players scores is the score given to the highest scoring player. If both players score the same amount, no one will receive any points.

Examples

Team A scores a 3 point hole and one in the box for 5 total points. Team B lands 2 in the box, for 4 points. Team A would score 1 point for the round.

Team A lands one in the cup, and one in the box for 5 points. Team B lands one in the cup and one in the box for 5 points. Points cancel out, no points are gained.

An article on WikiHow shows you how to create Outdoor Stickers. People often use vinyl decals on their Cornhole and Washer boards. Buying decals can be expensive. Creating your own stickers can save you money, while giving you a really unique look for your boards. You could create letting for the sides of a board or a large logo for the top of the board. Use your imagination and see what you can come up with! These stickers would be durable, stand up to a bit of moisture, and could even take a slight beating.

Creating your own stickers will require most, if not all of the following:

Acrylic varnish

Gloss varnish

Acrylic inks

Markers ( oil-based )

Blank sheet of paper, matte finish paper is good

Pencil

Printer

Artist’s pink soap or soap or brush cleaner and restorer

Exacto knife or sharp paper scissors

Spray adhesive

Yesterday I suggested several things that Washer Players could adopt from Cornhole Players. I suggested that Washer Players could Customize, Standardize, BUZZ, and Share.

It wouldn’t be fair to pick on one group and not the other!

This time the tables are turned. Now it’s time to discuss a few areas where Washer Players excel.

Cornhole Players Could Learn from Washer Players

Simplify. What is worth how many points? How far apart should be boards be? With less of a game standard, it’s the “House Rules” in Washer games. Play however you want based on who you have playing. Set the rules up front, and start tossing washers!

Mix It Up! While Cornhole Players play on standard sized boards, Washer Games come in all shapes and sizes. The hole is often 4 inches, but the box can be various sizes, and either octagon or square. There are Washer Pits, one hole boxes, three hole boards, 5 hole boards, and they can lay flat or be ramped. Variety is the spice of life, right?

Portability. While there are smaller or slimmer Cornhole boards, a Washers game can fit almost anyplace. Of the 2 games, Washers is much easier to haul take with you on a moments notice.

Skill. This one might spark some debate! In my opinion, Washer games tend to be much harder. It takes a lot of practice to get the tiny washers into the 4″ hole. There is a wide spread from beginners to seasoned pros. Practice, practice, practice.

These two games really are unique in the types of players that they attract. The best part of playing various games is finding the one or two that you really enjoy. Both of these games are quick to learn and tough to master, and both games can make an afternoon in the sun fly right by.

What do you think? Looking forward to hearing your comments!

Cornhole and Washers. Two games that would seem to have a lot in common, yet both games attract very different players.

This is the first of two posts where I’m going to have a little fun comparing Cornhole and Washers. I’m going to run through a handful of things that players of each game could try to make their game a little more entertaining.

Here we go!

Washer Players Could Learn from Cornhole Players

Customize! So far, there’s a clear winner in the battle of creativity. Cornhole boards are works of art, worthy of showing off. Lots of Washer boards and boxes are well made, but most lack color, graphics, logos, etc. Come on Washer Players, let’s see some creativity!

Standardize. Someday there might be a clearer standard for size, hole spacing, hole sizes, points scored, etc. At this point, Washer games come in all shapes and sizes. Variety is great, but a standard could really increase the game’s popularity.

BUZZ. I don’t mean from your beer! Cornhole is a hot game right now. It’s showing up in new places all of the time. There are a lot of people out there playing Washers, but they just don’t have the same excitement for the game. Tell people, hold your own tournaments, give people games for birthdays and holidays. If you love the game, let everyone know.

Share. This part goes along with the call for customization. This year, my challenge to everyone playing Washers is to show off! If you’re playing Washers, come check out the Community at WasherPlayers.net. Post some pictures, tell some stories, and have some fun. Cornhole Players do it, so should you!

These are just a few of the differences I can see when I look at fans of each game. What do you think? I’ll be curious to hear your comments!
